Fishing Ontario
Ontario, like British Columbia, has a large
variety of fishing opportunities for the hard core angler. The
most significant source's of fishing opportunities in the province
come from the Great Lakes and the many rivers and streams that
feed and drain them. The successful planting of Pacific salmon
and steelhead in these large lakes has opened up brand new fisheries
to the provinces and visiting anglers. With all these choices
in a province that offers more than 400,000 lakes, rivers and
streams, where does an angler start_
Some trout streams of note include the Credit,
the Niagara, the Rapids on the St. Mary's and the Nipigon, home
of the world record Brook Trout. In these rivers and many more
can be find world class rainbow, brown and brook trout fishing
as well as migratory salmon and steelhead. The urban streams of
Southern Ontario are a different experience to fish than you might
be accustomed to. In some areas, anglers fish off breakwalls,
but don't be discouraged, fishing can be outstanding.
Musky fishing is unique to Ontario. Rice
Lake, 75km east of Toronto offers excellent bass, crappie and
musky fishing. Northern Ontario's Temagami Lake is home to some
of the provinces finest lake trout and walleye fishing. For Brook
and lake trout try Nipigon Bay on Lake Superior.
The fishing season doesn't end when the freezing
temperatures arrive. Thousands of diehards drag their ice fishing
sheds on to their favourite, now frozen, fishing spots. Accompanied
by heaters and warm drink, through the ice they catch walleye,
perch, pike, whitefish, and trout.
All in all Ontario is a fisherman's
paradise. Thousands of lakes combined with hundreds of worthy
species is a combination for angling heaven.
